Bronze bust to commemorate one of the great personalities in ITC

British mathematician Tommy Flowers (1905-1998), who designed the prototype of Colossus, took an active part in codebreaking in World War Two. He is remembered as one of the paramount personalities in computer science in the UK. He designed Colossus while working in the telecommunication department of the General Post Office (later to become British Telecom, BT).

A memorial bust of Tommy Flowers was unveiled at Adastral Park, BT’s research and development headquarters in Martlesham Heath (Suffolk county) on Thursday 12 December 2013.

The rebuilt copy of Colossus was put on display in November 2007. Margaret Sale, wife of the late Tony Sale, who led the Colossus Rebuild team, was one of the special guests at the unveiling. Sale (1931-2011) was the founder of the British National Museum of Computing, and served as its first director from 1993 to 1999.
