Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit was launched 15 years ago, and by today it has become an online knowledge database that is a “must” for anyone. Everybody’s encyclopedia is currently available in 250 languages, contains 35 million entries, and at least 100 million people use it day after day.
Some say that at least 28 per cent of the world’s population would be less equipped with knowledge if it were not for Wikipedia and its 80 000 editors all over the world, who edit and update the “pages” of the online encylopedia on a voluntary basis. The free source of knowledge is valuable, and many say that if you cannot find something in Wikipedia then it is non-existant.
Initially, the community project received much criticism for the information being superficial and inaccurate, but collaborative editing turned out to prove the contrary. It is true though that time was needed to work out ways to best share knowledge online, and how to go about editing an online encyclopedia.
The Hungarian version was only launched in July 2003, and now it contains 380 000 entries in Hungarian, which ranks Hungary the 23rd. The Hungarian editors organised a Wiki meeting to celebrate the big anniversary.
