Ubuntu’s first edition is ten years old

Ubuntu’s first edition was released on 20 October 2004. The project aimed to release a new Ubuntu edition every sixth month, which would result in a system that is frequently updated.

Ubuntu is Linux distribution, the word has African origin with the meaning “humaneness towards others; I am who I am”. Ubuntu was adopted as the name of a community that intended to develop free, open source software. It was them who created Ubuntu Linux with the intention of spreading this philosophy in the software world.

Released ten years ago and supported until 30 April 2006, the first edition, the 4.10 version had the code name of Warty Warthog and the testname of Sounder. Ever since, new updated versions of Ubuntu keep coming out and the system is gaining popularity as general desktop Linux distribution.
