Retro computer world got really going these days, contemporary versions of classic consoles and computers are coming out all over the place. The latest is a completely new Sinclair ZX Spectrum from a new manufacturer, of course.
The British company SpecNext Ltd. pays tribute to Sir Clive Sinclair' classic ZX Spectrum+ with a machine named ZX Spectrum Next.
The smart exterior design of ZX Spectrum Next was again created by Rick Dickinson, the original designer of the classic piece, while the electronics was designed by the Brazilian Victor Trucco. ZX Spectrum Next is very much likely to be a hit though we need to wait until the actual product is released.
The powerfully upgraded Next is clearly a tribute of respect and not a chip by chip clone of the computer from the1980s. Despite this the "retro community" liked the concept, which has been seen only in 3D renderings so far. Perhaps because it may give a flight to the Spectrum brand into the future and because of the modernised Spectrum+ style case and keyboard.
Next is based on Trucco's previous project, on the TBBlue and the FPGA-based Altera Cyclone. It is a reimplementation of the original at the hardware level, which is good news as it will run all former software. It is planned to be compatible with all the expansions of the ZX Spectrum and with the new ULAplus video mode. It is possible that the high resolution mode of the ZX81 will also be implemented before ZX Spectrum Next is released in the market. (Click on the link below to read specifications.)
