The past, present and future of computer games in the UK

The Centre for Computing History (www.computinghistory.org) in Cambridge, UK, will organise a two-day event on 24-25 May to give an insight into the past, present and future of video and computer games as well as into the industry built around gaming. Visitors can not only have a look at well-known classics but can also play the games.

At this special event visitors can read related background information side by side the games. Gaming magazines from the ’80s as well as computers of the time, which laid the hardware foundations for the “gaming revolution” in the United Kingdom and accelerated development, will be on display. Prominent professionals will deliver talks on both days.

The computer games market of the United Kingdom is currently the largest in Europe, and the third largest worldwide. Data from 2012 reveal that this market generates 5.2 billion dollars in revenues annually, while the number of players is approximately 33.6 million. UK creators have designed a good number of games (such as Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider, Burnout, LittleBig Planet, Wipeout, Dirt), and have inscribed their names in the history of this art and industry.
